After reading “Steppenwolf” by Herman Hesse, you probably notice that the main character of this novel, Harry Haller, is in a constant internal battle, where there is a “continuous and deadly enmity” (41-42) between two natures, one which he claims to possess and the other to be divided by “one human and one lupine” (41). While many insights can be gleaned from reading Steppenwolf, I believe Haller tries to conform to the bourgeois in every aspect of his life. However, he belatedly realizes how much he actually despises the bourgeoisie for its complacency and conformity. He comes to this conclusion when he meets several people willing to help him reach this conclusion by preparing him to experience the “Magic Theatre”. I also believe that Magic Theater is an important learning ground for teaching laughter, including Haller. The Magic Theater, which I believe is “a world of images, not reality,” (178) is a reflection of Haller's mind. . I also believe that when Haller enters the Magic Theater he is completely separated from reality because the elixir allows Haller to see what his own soul seeks; thus, the Magical Theater serves as an important learning ground for Haller, as it helps him "see everything through the eyes of Harry and the old steppenwolf glasses" (176), which is intended to help him see his true self , as he sometimes couldn't see before. Furthermore, the Magical Theater shows Harry that "his past life had been false and full of stupid unhappiness" (199). These regrets and mistakes in his past help him gain an understanding of life so that he "can rearrange these pieces of a former self into any order he chooses" (192). The Magic Theater therefore also serves, as the chess player points out, to show Haller that life's obstacles and decisions are “all one hundred thousand pieces of the game of life” (217) in his pocket. For this reason Haller will be able to control his life, so as not to make the same mistakes again. Rather, he will be able to relive every moment of life as it should be lived.
