Identity Theft and Possible Risks in Technology Identity theft has been a major privacy and fraud issue. In the Identity Theft Resource Center's data breach analysis (2013), the number of data breaches from 2005 to 2012 increased. In 2012, there were 49% of cases where data breaches exposed people's Social Security numbers. The 2012 data breach has a rate of 27.4% caused by hackers. These breaches commonly came from 36.4% of businesses and 34.7% of healthcare providers (Identity Theft Resource Center 2013). The number of identity thefts varies from physical possession to digital possession. At least a fifth of rubbish bins contain documents containing people's credit card numbers and personal information. People who throw away junk mail contain a lot of personal information that is useful for stealing someone's identity (Davis, 2002). Technology becomes a necessity where people use it on a daily basis and as a result it has also become a use for identity theft. Over the years, as technology develops, identity theft also increases. This document shows the types, methods and techniques used for identity theft and also examines the possible risk of identity theft arising from current technology. What is identity theft? Identity theft is a term used to describe a criminal who uses an individual's identity without consent. A common identity theft crime would be identity fraud. Many of the crimes are regularly linked to money issues (Reyns, 2013). With the technology commonly used nowadays, we become more and more dependent on it for business, financial, medical and other purposes. As a result, this has also become a target for identity thieves. The Internet provides us with information and accessibility, but information stored on the Internet is easy... in the middle of paper... theft crimes to occur. Recycled email may be good for users, but its collapse could lead to a lot of identity theft from those who have had their email accounts recycled. Conclusion and Possible Risk of Future Technology Identity theft is something that has been around for some time and is not going away anytime in the future. With much of the technology coming out every year it can pose a threat to our privacy and personal information. The damage that identity theft can cause can range from minor to severe. As a result, no one would want to become a victim of an identity theft crime because we would never know if we would be able to restore everything to its original state. For those who have an addiction to technology, be careful what you do, what you put on the Internet, what information you give, this may haunt you in the future.
