Topic > First British settlers in Australia - 753

When did the British settlers arrive in Australia? The First Fleet arrived at Botany Bay on 18 January 1788, which was later declared an official prison. The fleet's captain, Captain Phillips, however, found that the harbor lacked fresh water, so it was unsuitable for condemnation. The fleet was then redirected to Port Jackson which then marked the first official European landing in Sydney Harbour. During the creation of the official penal colony, 751 convicts along with 252 marines were released and were eventually awarded land to start a new colony. Subsequently, in 1790 and 1791, two more war fleets arrived and in 1793 the first free settlers. In 1788 the penal colony was officially established with prisoners, families and soldiers. What did the two different types of people think of each other? The English considered the Aborigines to be “poor creatures” with no fixed abode. The English did not like the idea of living like a hermit and migrating from place to place so often. Talking to some Aboriginal people they seemed quite confident that they had no privacy and that everyone had access to what they wanted. They were also very curious as to why they wore such small clothes and thought they were very disgusting people. Aboriginal people had no idea that "white skinned" people existed before the settlers arrived. They thought the English were behaving strangely among themselves. The Aboriginal people saw them digging their own graves, beating and hanging people, taking food without asking and being selfish with each other. The aborigines were so confused with these people and initially thought that they were the ghosts of dead ancestors due to their white color. How was the relationship between the English... half of the paper... the children were well looked after which changed periodically between different homes. Some members of the "stolen generation" were actually grateful for the removal because of the opportunities they were given, such as education in a different environment. Conclusion The Aboriginal people and the British settlers were in a huge conflict that still applies to modern times. There were different perspectives on whether the English invaded or settled peacefully on Aboriginal land, however it is certain for the most part that what they did was brutal, rude and very disrespectful to the Aboriginal people. The English took a lot from the Aboriginal people, including land, food, people and even tradition. Whether slavery and Aboriginal removal improved modern Australia was debatable, however it certainly diminished respect for the English and they certainly owed the Aboriginal people an apology.
