Teenagers and their tanning problem It is expected that 30 million people will tan this year (“Tanning carries risks” 1). This means that 30 million people put themselves at risk of skin cancer, premature aging and find themselves in a potentially unsanitary environment. The tanning industry wants people to think that the only thing tanning can do for them is make them tan and beautiful. When in reality it has the opposite effect. People need to know what they are doing to themselves before they get into a tanning bed. Many people choose not to recognize all the harmful effects that tanning can have on their body. They think it won't happen to them. But I will provide facts and statistics to demonstrate that everyone is at risk of the possible results of using a tanning bed. Every year, 1 million new cases of skin cancer are found (“No tanning for teenagers” 1). We need to get that number down. If we made a law that required a person to be over 18 to tan, many lives would be saved. Tanning salons do not comply with their regulations. Not only are they lying to us, but they are also misleading us in many ways. A recent survey conducted where a reporter from The Consumer Union asked multiple questions to tanning salon employees in 12 different cities to see the results. In doing so, they found that 75% of employees said their customers could tan every day, 6% said they would allow them to tan without glasses, 20% said minors could come without being present of an adult and 35% said that tanning does not damage their skin. cancer (“Tanning carries risks” 1). These statistics are too high. Not only are the people at the tanning beds unreliable, but so are their actual beds. Emp... half the paper... a little bit of nothing. Turning 18 is a big step in a teenager's life. They automatically become more responsible and more mature. They should be able to be mature enough to make the right decision by choosing not to tan. Additionally, they would no longer have peer pressure while in high school to look a certain way. This would be a great law that could save lives, but at the same time protect the American right to freedom to choose what a person does with themselves. Many states are taking action and creating new regulations and laws for tanners. Let's be the ones who really give our best. Let's be the ones to start something new. People would look at us and think how much we care about our people and their lives. If we created this law, many lives would be saved. Future cancer patients would no longer exist. Our citizens of the state of Indiana will thank us in the future.
