Topic > My Multimodal English 1101 Course - 728

Makers and Makerspaces was the topic of my Multimodal English 1101 course, exposing me to an innovative culture and developing skills in all modes of communication. Aside from the importance of this new culture, which motivated me and gave rise to such resonant excitement to enroll in the course, towards the end of the course I realized that the main goal was for each student to work towards mastery of the skills communicative. Furthermore, the course consistently contributed to the development of my personal writing and communication skills through the creation of a web page, a group presentation and an analytical essay. Being an international student, the transition was tough because I had been detached from the English language for three years before coming to Georgia Tech. However, the course gave me the opportunity to learn a language that I will need for my personal progress. Even though there are still countless things to improve regarding my English skills, the course taught me to express my ideas efficiently and create effective arguments using different sources such as images and research. The English course forced me to become more organized by analyzing each project into different processes which forced me to make continuous effort for the class, which differs from the usual high school standards. Because I wasn't working under pressure, my ideas could flow more naturally and my work was of higher quality. When I created the web page, which is Artifact 1, the detailed process served as a guide on how to proceed with my web page, which included multiple modalities in a thoughtful and synergistic way. Understanding the genre and audience, as well as the rhetorical process, generated a detailed description… it is not convincing. To create my essay, English 1101 worksheets during the peer review process had me develop an intricate yet accessible thesis statement for the analysis essay. Additionally, the importance of teamwork and collaboration to produce superior work as a result of reinforcing each other's strengths was demonstrated in my third artifact, which is a group presentation. Although this project was my first presentation in English and had many feelings encountered, positive and negative, it showed me the influence a speaker can convey not only in a large group but also within a classroom. Good speakers plan not only the content of their speech but also their delivery style. Despite the importance of having a clear and logical message to convey, the way in which the message is presented is fundamental to bringing out the concept of desire (WOVEN 229).
