During the 1800s Native Americans kept the peace while Americans were selfish in their pursuit of land. Americans believe in manifest destiny. The Native Americans did everything they could to remain at peace with the Americans. Americans persistently fought with Native Americans to conquer Native American lands. The Americans wanted to move the Native Americans from what they thought was the land given to them by God. The Americans believed they had the power to control all of the United States, because God had given them the right. They also believed that Native Americans knew Manifest Destiny and that they should abandon "American" lands. Americans thought that Native Americans leaving their lands was “a touching sight” (Brown 31), that Native Americans understood that leaving the past behind was their destiny. Americans believed that Native Americans felt forced to abandon the land because of Manifest Destiny. They believed that the Native Americans were happy to leave. The Americans also thought that by moving the Native Americans onto reservations they were helping the Native Americans. Americans thought that reservations would “free them from the power of the states” (Jackson 133) and force the Native Americans to move to leave their “savage” ways behind. They thought that by forcing the Native Americans to assimilate into the Americans, the Native Americans would be “a happy and prosperous people” (Jackson133) instead of the savages that the Americans believed them to be. The Americans believed that because the Native Americans realized that they were fated to give up their lands, the Native Americans would go to... middle of paper...,"(Jackson 134) so that all the lands could be them. The Americans were only concerned with taking all the land from the natives so they could expand the United States and keep all the minerals in the new lands. In the 1800s the Native Americans kept the peace while the Americans were selfish in their crusade for earth. The Americans thought that according to Manifest Destiny they were the sole rulers of the Native American lands. Although the Americans wanted their lands, the Native Americans wanted to remain at peace with the Americans. The Americans continually fought with Bernier and the Native Americans even when the Native Americans did not had done no harm. The Americans were indifferent in conquering Native American lands. The Americans were savage in their pursuit of Native American land.
