She is best known as the famous infamous British serial killer. His crimes horrified and disgusted many British families. I first heard about Beverly Allitt while watching TruTV. The show had a feature on Allitt and his crimes, this immediately caught my attention. The fact that a nurse would intentionally harm children seemed immensely ironic and compelling to me. In my eyes, a nurse was someone who cared and showed concern for a patient. Not someone who intentionally caused distress and trauma to innocent children. Going into this topic, I didn't know much about the scandalous nurse. I barely knew his story and background. I had heard that Allitt was mentally ill and had encountered some obstacles during her childhood. I also knew that his main way of killing was through excessive doses of insulin and that he worked in a baby ward. Speculation that Allitt suffered from a strange mental illness has always intrigued me. I've always had a lot of questions about Allitt and his murders. For example, why were the children killed and why were they so young? Children would have been easy targets for Allitt. Since most children are smaller than most adults, it would be easier for an adult to overwhelm a child. Furthermore, young children are innocent and may not realize what is happening in their surroundings. This brings me to the next question: How many children were killed and how were they killed? From my little knowledge of Allit's story, I thought he had killed five children. I also knew that its primary way of killing was through large amounts of potassium or insulin. Allit's murder weapons were easily accessible to her. I always wondered if Allitt really had a mental disorder or if he was faking it for sympathy. I t... half the paper... your appendix; he then pinched his surgical scar, preventing it from healing properly. Allitt had been in the hospital for numerous reasons. He complained of “gallbladder pain, headaches, urinary infections, uncontrolled vomiting, blurred vision, minor injuries, appendicitis, back problems and ulcers” (Ramsland 2). When she was admitted to the hospital in 1991, Allitt perplexed nurses when she "tampered with the thermometer to produce [disconcerting] readings and [also] pierced her right breast to inject water" (Ramsland 2). While working on the ward, Allitt was known to do strange things. She was suspected of "smearing feces on the walls and placing them in the refrigerator for others to find" when Beverly was convicted of her murders; she cut herself with paper clips and burned herself with hot water. She was later admitted to a psychiatric ward for her safety.
