Mass mentality is the idea that when a large group of people stand together they lose their sense of individualism and moral constraints to blindly follow what they are told . During the French Revolution mobs were widespread as much of the population was hungry, poor and angry. In A Tale of Two Cities the author, Charles Dickens criticizes mobs by showing how dangerous they can be in many scenes. The first example of a mob-like scene in A Tale of Two Cities is on pages 41-43 when the wine chest is broken on the ground showing the animalistic nature of the mob. People stopped what they were doing and rushed to the wine to get as much as they could from the land. Dickens notes that the wine "had also stained many hands, many faces, and many bare feet" (42). This shows the animalistic nature of the crowd with red smeared across their bodies like blood. Here Dickens also shows how dangerous the crowds are by the fact that, after all the wine had been drunk, "the demonstrations ceased, as suddenly as they had broken out" (42). This shows how quickly the mass of people can do it...
