IntroductionMedical assisting courses are programs that train people how to work in different doctors' offices, health centers and even clinics through the supervision of doctors and nurses (Garber & Fuchs 2010). There has been strong growth in this field as they can work in both clinics and administrative departments. The program involves the study and preparation for various careers in the healthcare field which constitute both theoretical and practical skills. Some of the important skills in medical assisting programs include; patient interviews, understanding medical terms, record keeping, anatomy and physiology, medical insurance, hematology, medications, first aid, CPR and even laboratory tests. While learning, students must also gain skills in different health centers, clinics and nursing offices by participating in activities such as first aid assessment, vision and hearing screening, Ht or Wt screening and familiarizing themselves with different medical settings. In addition to clinical skills medical care also requires some administrative skills which include; good communication skills, appointment scheduling, billing procedures, record keeping and also coding. Additionally, medical assistant students have the opportunity to specialize in specific areas of interests, for example, one may decide to specialize in eye medicine, and through the addition of coursework, a student can train to become an ophthalmic medical assistant (Kuehn 2011). Career Opportunities in the Medical Assistant Field of Study There are many colleges, schools, and even technical schools that offer certificates of different careers as a medical assistant.
