Do you know where the countries of Castile and Aragon are located on the map? You won't find them on any map made in the last few centuries. In the 16th century the rulers of Castile and Aragon formed a union that would eventually become Spain. Imperialism is the act of expanding a country's borders. This can be done through colonies, conquest (aggressive expansion), and diplomacy such as royal marriages. It has been a hotly debated topic whether a country has the moral and legal right to conquer another. At first glance, especially in today's era, imperialism is a negative and cruel act. Although some aspects are cruel, both parties can benefit from it. When a country is more technologically advanced, it will have stronger armies. The winner of a war is therefore the strongest nation, so he is bringing his power to the conquered nation. This allows them to research and discover more complex and useful things in this world. Even in today's humanitarian era imperialism continues to occur in the United States as well. The territory of Puerto Rico and Hawaii were examples of both aggressive (soldiers) and diplomatic imperialism. Hawaii was, in a sense, conquered by the US Army. Hawaii was a monarch, meaning they had a king and queen. In the late 1800s Hawaii was going through a depression and farmers began to rebel. They received support from the United States, and Hawaii's queen, Liliuokalani, surrendered peacefully. No bullets were fired by the American soldiers. Sugar was the major economic force for Hawaii, and the United States was its major trading power. In 1890, Congress passed a tariff on imports, including sugar, which severely damaged the Hawaiian economy and led to depression. The farmers realised… by the middle of the paper… they would probably be absorbed. Diplomatic imperialism will continue into the future, but aggressive imperialism is on the way to extinction. Imperialism will only bring good to the future as it brings technology and greater access to resources to disadvantaged countries. Works Cited "Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad Book Summary."
