After analyzing the multitude of issues, it has become very clear that many efforts are currently being researched to ensure the prevention and treatment of alcohol dependence and drug abuse which impacts not only the abuser, but the their families, to include the community as a whole (“National Institute on Drug Abuse”). Success clearly depends on the compliance of the individual and the willingness of the community to provide adequate and appropriate treatment. As discussed by the editor, Raymond Goldberg and his colleagues, it has been difficult to convey the urgent need for treatment and the appropriate protocol to measure its success. . In selecting “YES,” the National Institute on Drug Abuse acknowledges this difficulty, but also claims that prolonged treatment produces more fruitful results (Goldberg 401). In the “No” category, the primary concern is the scientific approach to data collection, and what constitutes a drug treatment is also unclear (Goldberg 401). While acknowledging this complaint, it is clear that the focus of the “NO” category has only highlighted a small part of the problem. Unfortunately, they have also inadequately used the widespread and available research to evaluate the multitude of drug treatment efforts and improvements.
