1. It has become much more difficult to identify the true values and those taught by amateurs about sports in our culture. The passion for competition, the team dimension and sporting actions are profound values that sport works to instill. It becomes one of the most important ways to teach these values to our youth and unfortunately it is becoming easy to forget. Throughout the semester we have carefully examined sports, looking at their influence, role, and meaning in our American society today. At the beginning of the semester, two foundations for considering sport, critical and functionalist theory, were identified, laying the foundation for examining the rest of the topics. To better understand these two points of view, an operational definition of each is necessary. The three Cs of: capitalism, coercion, and commercialism help describe the critical/confrontational theory and vision of sports in our United States. When looked at from this perspective, some of the purposes of sport in society include the promotion and expansion of capitalist drives, as well as the demonstration of the power and privileges of elite groups within society.
