Topic > Similarities and differences between the Iliad and...

An analysis of the Iliad and the Odyssey shows us that Achilles and Odysseus have several qualities in common, but that they also have numerous characteristics that show the differences between the two epic heroes. Both of these men are very violent and kill very cruelly, they are also very immature emotionally, and finally both Achilles and Odysseus are favored by Athena. With all these characteristics in common they also have several things that distinguish them from each other. First of all, their mentality is very different. Achilles has a very linear mentality; he doesn't beat around the bush and gets straight to the point of why he wants to fight. On the other hand, Ulysses is much more deceitful and cunning; it's very strategic and it's almost more powerful because of the way it makes you think and act towards it. Subsequently, their reasons for fighting are very different. Achilles is fighting because it is his destiny and it is what he must do, Ulysses is fighting to return home to his family who he has not seen for several years. Finally, their return home makes these two characters very different. Achilles never returns home, he dies under the walls of Troy while fighting. Ulysses, on the contrary, ends up returning home to his wife and son, that is, after having rejected the suitors who had threatened him.
