The entire Lacks family suffers and feels deep emotion as they watch Henrietta, their mother, sister, and cousin, slowly suffer and ultimately die. Deborah in particular has to endure considerable hardship and misery as she has to grow up for a long time without a mother, and also discover the story behind the tragedy. The pain that Henrietta feels passes largely to her family as they also feel her pain. Families and friends always support each other, but they in turn have to experience and endure a lot of agony because of the love they have. When a person remains loved, the pain they feel often passes on to those who love them, as sadness and pain always transfers to other members. As Deborah gives a speech and begins to talk to her mother, people can see the emotion and hurt as she says "we miss you mom," as she continues to talk to her mother and talks about how she thinks of Henrietta and how she wishes being able to see and hold Henrietta in his arms, "as if I knew you held me" and talks about how he knows that "you deep in my soul, for I am part of you and you are me" (221). Skloot shows how even watching someone suffer or feeling the loss of someone can cause deep emotions and agony in people, particularly families.
