“Inspired Eccentricity” is a bell hooks story about his grandfathers, dad, and Baba Gus. The two main characters are described with many contrasts. They are opposites in many ways: physical appearance, characters, and even their effects on the Hooks. Their marriage seems to be a strange combination, but very few people understand that Dad and Baba Gus are not only different but also complementary to each other. At the beginning of the essay, Dad and Baba Gus are described as opposite in physical appearance. Papa Gus is "short and dark" (421), while Baba Gus is tall and white, which is enough to help her "pass easily" while denying any trace of darkness" (421). Their walking styles are also different .Papa walks "slowly, as if carrying a great weight" (421), but Baba moves "quickly, as if there was never time to waste" (421). Papa Gus is a man of silence, “he always sits quietly in his chair by the stove, calm and still as the Buddha sits” (421) Unlike Papa Gus, Baba is described as “talking endlessly” (421), and usually preaches, shouts, and fidgets. They are at odds in almost everything, even in not sleeping in the same bed because Baba can't stand her husband's bad smell. Two people who seem not to be together have been together for more than seventy years, the majority of human life. Someone wonders whether their marriage began with love or not, but they have overcome all disagreements, created a large family and also have many grandchildren. In addition to Hooks, Dad and Baba Gus are not only different in physical appearance, but they are also contrasting in their characters. Dad Gus is a calm and religious man. He has a strong faith in God and serves as “God's right hand man” (422). He is the person who people feel sorry for because he is controlled by his wife. And even though his son thinks he is not a "real man" (422), he always refuses to fight back. People respect and "admire his calmness" (422), and Hooks is greatly influenced by his grandfather who "won't let anyone tell him what to do with his life" (422). On the other hand, Baba Gus is a blasphemer and usually swears. He never goes to church, he also doesn't believe in God and people think he will be a bad example for children.
