Some facts about psychiatric drugs for children are that the drugs are prescribed with a false diagnosis. The children prescribed are not severely impaired by their symptoms, they are simply aging and showing signs of adolescence; however, pediatricians see a little frustration in a child's life and convince parents or legal guardians that they need unnecessary medications to make children docile and calm. Parents do not know that the drug given to children means more money for drug companies and psychiatric research groups and may not help the children at all. Medication given to children is a trial and error situation. It may take years to find the right drug. Children taking this drug feel like test subjects when their pediatricians/psychotherapists have to monitor them for compliance with the drug. Side effects differ from individual to individual and range from nervous exhaustion, inadequacy, mania, delirium, physical harm, self-harm and possible suicide attempt. These symptoms can be treated with even more medications. Other side effects include: headache, stomach pain, dry mouth, constipation, gas, weight loss/gain, and acne. These symptoms may disappear or be tolerable. It is difficult to determine whether or not new symptoms are due to a new disease, medications, or simply the development of natural hormones. Children who take prescription medications have more difficulty in school. They have difficulty concentrating due to some side effects such as grogginess and inability to concentrate. Special preparation is needed to help children make up for lost time getting used to medications.
