During the war, eugenics research was used to determine who had good bloodlines and people were classified based on the results. Women who did not meet good standards were forced to be sterilized against their will, such as Leah in the story. Adolf Hitler wanted to ensure that no children were produced that would ruin the bloodlines; he only wanted perfect Aryan children. Even in Germany Jews were considered to be of the lowest class, regardless of their position or education, they were stripped of citizenship and thrown into concentration camps or killed. Furthermore, upper class German women were treated better than those considered lower class. Lower class women, by Nazi standards, were often told what to do where they could go, they had no rights, their homes were often searched to make sure they were hiding Jews..
