Will it be casual or romantic, gourmet or quick service? All the little things add up to the overall experience, from the lighting down to the little things like salt and pepper and cutlery. A restaurant might have a great atmosphere, be well lit, have classy music playing in the background and have excellent decor, however if one of the little things is missing, it drastically affects the atmosphere. For example, a restaurant might have all the elements of a successful restaurant, but if the salt shakers are empty or the lights flicker and are too dim, this negatively affects the atmosphere for customers. To create an exceptional ambience, it must be in line with the theme of the restaurant. A cozy American restaurant wouldn't look great with antique Chinese accessories decorating the walls. It would be more appropriate to decorate with old photographs or works of art that show a simpler period in American history, when people felt more comfortable. Comfort is the key to the restaurant's atmosphere. This has to do with the relationship between comfort and associated safety in the human mind. If, for example, a family restaurant is decorated with vulgar and provocative images and dimly lit, not only will this make customers uncomfortable, but it will also make them feel a sense of lack of safety, as these elements are not typically associated with
