Garbage, sidewalks, cars, smoke, gas, buildings, that's all you'll find in a city. The Kenai Peninsula is one of the few places in America where salmon fishing is still possible. It is described “as one of the most beautiful places on earth”. Our job as a community is to protect our river, animals, and all the beauty of Alaska. Alaska already does a great job of keeping our roads clean, but we use a lot of road salt in the process. Road salt is extremely harmful to the environment, animals, trees, soil, water, cars and roads. Alaska winters require a convenient and effective way to de-ice the roads. Road salt, however, is so harmful to the environment that it is very important to use it as little as possible. Not only does road salt corrode our roads and damage our cars, but it also has adverse effects on our animals. Road salt (sodium chloride) spreads into the environment through runoff, melting ice, melting snow, and even through wind.
