Bullying has existed for generations. Bullying usually occurs face to face; you knew who the bullies were and where they lived. Thanks to the technology available, a bully can be totally anonymous on the Internet. Technological advances, the Internet and social networks have produced a new method of bullying called cyberbullying. In recent years, incidents of cyberbullying have become widespread. According to DoSomething.org, nearly sixty percent of young people say they have been victims of cyberbullying in the past. 68% of teens agree that cyberbullying is a serious problem. 81% of young people think online bullying is easier to get away with than in-person bullying” (11 Facts 2013). Cyberbullying is a serious problem with devastating consequences and we should do everything we can to control it. Victims of cyberbullying can be harassed using different methods and behaviors. Cyberbullying occurs when a young person embarrasses, threatens, humiliates, or torments another young person over the Internet, cell phone, or through text messages. Cyberbullies want their victims to feel bad about themselves. It normally does not occur once, but repeats many times (Cyber Bullying Statistics 2013). Social media networks such as Facebook and MySpace have proven to be a popular tool against Internet bullying. Bullies use various techniques to disguise what they are doing to strangers. They will use codes, intentional misspellings, abbreviations and letter substitutions. Cyberbullies use different forms of bullying.
