It is like the ego, in the way it operates socially and in the conscious and unconscious mind. When there is an internal conflict, the ego implements defense mechanisms to prevent overwhelming anxiety. These mechanisms include repression, denial, projection, displacement, regression, and sublimation. The ego unconsciously uses repression to prevent disturbing thoughts from seeing the light. Denial prevents someone from realizing the negative effects of a situation. Projection involves someone blaming another person for their own inappropriate thoughts or behaviors. Displacement satisfies a need by replacing it with an object. When someone experiences a highly stressful situation, they may go into regression or retreat into past behaviors. Sublimation is very similar to displacement, but satisfies the urge in a socially acceptable way. Sigmund Freud was known as the father of psychoanalysis. Many of his ideas were based on personal experience and contained many theories about his life. He worked closely with his friend and colleague Josef Breuer and together they published their studies in 1895. However, Breuer stopped collaborating with Freud believing that he focused too much attention on the sexual aspects of his patients ("Biography of Sigmund Freud", n.d., paragraph 4). Although people have different opinions about his work, he will always be influential
