Johnathan Swift, the author of The Modest Proposal, went to and studied at college. He writes with a direct and engaging approach to his proposal to save Ireland in the 1720s. Swift's aim is to solve many kinds of dilemmas in Ireland during his time. He adopts a mystifying tone to take over his Irish government. The problem Swift attempts to solve is the overpopulation of children and lack of food in Ireland. Ireland in 1720 was quite poor, especially in Dublin, where Swift lived. The Irish government asked Britain for help but did nothing to help. Dublin's problem was to feed millions of people with the little food they had grown. Swift believed he had an excellent idea for solving poverty on the streets of Dublin. Since he had no listeners, he decided to write his proposal and then send it to the government to read. He hoped they would read it and thank him for his ingenious solution to their problem. His proposal plans to set up a system of intended parents to give birth to babies for use in Dublin.
