The Code of Hammurabi was established by Hammurabi, king of Babylon, to create and maintain social order. Judging by these laws, I would say that the society defined by these laws consists of rather rigid structures and rules in aspects of the family, the economy, and the justice system. It seems that various social roles are very clearly defined in terms of what is expected of them, as well as the punishments they will receive for not fulfilling their duties/responsibilities. For example, in the domestic sphere, the father has the highest power in the family. This can be illustrated by the fact that he could sell his wife and children into slavery if he could provide tangible evidence that this is fully justified. Furthermore, he could exile or even physically maim his children if such punishments were warranted due to the children's excessive rebellion. The fact that the father is the dominant figure in the family therefore denotes a highly patriarchal society according to these laws.
