The pastor must not add his own words or ideas to Scripture, but expound the truth of the Word. A preacher must not add to or subtract from the Word of God. He must uphold the Word of God as the authoritative, inerrant, and infallible Word. To do anything less is to fail as a true shepherd. Another aspect of pastoral ministry is that each pastor is unique. God has given each pastor differently and with his own style. It is imperative that a pastor uses the gifts he has to bear witness to Christ. It is also important to preach Christ and not yourself. It is critical that a pastor understands who he is, accepts himself, and develops his God-given gifts. Too often, preachers compare themselves to others and envy what they don't have. This is dangerous and sinful. We must accept the gifts given by God and use them for His glory. Pastors will also experience personal pain as they minister. This is one of the methods that God can use to make the pastor grow and be more mature. It also helps the pastor identify with the pain and suffering that people in his congregation may be going through.
