According to Shockley-Zabak (2009) Leadership is a process that guides individuals, groups, and the entire organization in establishing goals and sustaining action to support the goals. What exactly is meant by leadership? There are literally hundreds of definitions of who a leader is and what is considered leadership. Each definition can vary from one individual to another and can change from one situation to another. For example, we might call an individual a leader because of his election to the presidency of an institution. Other times we say he is not a leader because he does not exhibit the leadership behaviors expected of a leader. In other words, we expect leadership from the legitimate position of the presidency, but when that president does not exhibit leadership behaviors, we say that the president is not a leader. According to Yukl, (2002). The definition of leadership is arbitrary and very subjective. Some definitions are more useful than others, but there is no “correct” definition. Leadership theories: Theories are most useful for influencing practice when they suggest new ways in which events and situations can be perceived. New insights can be provided by focusing on possible interrelationships that practice has failed to notice, which can be further explored and tested through empirical research. If the result is a better understanding of practice, the gap between theory and practice is significantly reduced for those involved. (Hughes and Bush, 1991, p.234). Trait Theory This theory first emerged in the writings of the early Greeks and Romans and is prevalent today among those who believe that leadership cannot be developed. This theory assumed that leaders had innate traits that made them effective, great leaders were considered to be born with leadership ability, so either you have leadership qualities or you don't. According to Shockley – zalabak (2009) leadership theory, leaders possessed innate traits that made them effective; it is commonly called the "great man" theory. Leadership trait theory is the idea that people are born with certain traits or character qualities and since traits are associated with competent leadership, it assumes that if you could identify people with the correct traits, you will be able to identify leaders and people with leadership potential. It is believed that we are born naturally with traits that are part of our personality; In short, this theory believes that leaders are born and not made
